RE: With Phonak and widex, the in situ is done while wearing the domes you’ll be using. with Beltone Serene 17s (and I assume the other GN models that are identical) the software asks you to do the in situ with power domes, which, to me, removes the accounting of the ear canal shape and resonance on the prescription delivery to the eardrum. I have been seeing, and reading, that short of REM (about which there’s been a lot of debate, and which I don’t have access to anyway), in situ can be a great way to get more accurate target results, as compared to an audiogram alone. However, with wearing power domes for the in situ and then changing back to vented, open etc afterwards, that would seemingly remove any advantage - basically just being a different audiogram.
Thoughts? Could I simply ignore the software request to wear power domes and do it with my preferred domes? Any reason this would skew things?

I believe Your question about which domes to use relates to the common inSitu questions about;
  • Should I clearly hear the beep in my hearing aids?
  • Or, should I barely hear the beep in my hearing aids?
First off, the best practice results from REM will most accurately prescribe/Rx your hearing loss. But not all Audiologists use REM. So there's that.

My thoughts about which domes to wear during in-Situ is that this is terrible advice from Beltone!!
  • First of all, it adds confusion. If you specify your acoustics incorrectly to the hearing aid fitting software then your calculated Prescription/Rx/Gain will be incorrect. So they are advising that you specify your acoustics correctly to the hearing aid fitting software, but then just wear power domes in order to hear the beeps clearly. That is confusing.
My advice is that once you proceed without best practice/REM then your calculated Prescription/Rx/Gain is just an estimate. It is no longer rocket science. So try it however you like, or whichever sounds like the best results;
  • Clearly hear the beeps
  • Barely hear the beeps
  • Hear the beeps with your everyday domes
  • Hear the beeps by temporarily wearing power domes
If you don't like the resultant inSitu prescription/Rx, then try inSitu again using a different method.
