If anyone is curious what its like to have misophonia as an adult, I am happy to share my first hand knowledge.
I no longer suffer from my three triggers, because I removed myself from the location where I suffered them.
Do earplugs help? Yes, they got me through an airport without being refused to board a flight. I can have a normal conversation when I wear earplugs but I rarely need them or use them.
Just getting through airport security without an argument can be difficult and once stressed my reactions to triggers will be viewed as violent even if my action is only a momentary verbal assault. It is the shear intensity of my anger that has provoked people to attack me!
I gave up my job, sold my city flat, moved abroad found a new home in a quiet village.
When stressed I will now flee any situation of irritating repetitive sounds for fear of gaining a new trigger.
You will not know what is wrong with you, neither will your doctor. You will likely feel out of character.
Expect blood tests, hearing tests and a head MRI scan. They will not find anything, they need to talk to you more and test you less.
My main problem is a lack of being able to attenuate sound. What starts as a hearing problem ends up as a behavioral problem.
For many adults this may never be diagnosed. They may loose their partner, their job and their freedom.
